Hub City Now: Interview with Amanda Barlow Leitch

In this episode of “Hub City Now with Tyrone Tony Reed Jr.,” the host spoke with Amanda Barlow Leitch, West Tennessee Regional Director for Alzheimer’s Tennessee, about Silver Alert Mont and Silver Alert kits.

The Silver Alert Law that took effect July 1, 2021 is already helping to find missing individuals who have wandered due to dementia, physical impairment, or disability. The TBI is tasked with oversight and creating a uniform statewide protocol for missing persons, including public alerts through media and on interstates, as well as posts on social media and coordination with local law enforcement.

“Silver Alerts are lifesaving and especially critical to the safety of our Tennessee seniors, if all of us are aware of who is in need of our help to find their way home safely,” Janice Wade-Whitehead, Alzheimer’s Tennessee CEO and President explained on Alzheimer's Tennessee website. “Alzheimer’s Tennessee is working to help the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) and local law enforcement understand Alzheimer’s and dementia – and how to best support wandering individuals and their families.”

With TBI providing education, implementation and tracking, Silver Alert will be more effective and more capable of saving lives. Creating a uniform protocol across the state will significantly strengthen the Silver Alert and provide clear instructions for local, inter-agency, and media coordination for how to respond to calls of vulnerable, missing adults who may be disoriented and incapable of finding their own way home.

Barlow Leitch spoke about what's in the Silver Alert kits, what information a person needs to fill out and have in the kit and how it helps law enforcement, media and the community to locate a missing person.

In this episode of Hub City Now, the host interviews Dr. Tisa Day, Wendy Trice Martin and Jennifer Brou, members of the Society for African American Cultural Awareness (SAACA) and the Miss Jackson Juneteenth Coalition.

Day, Martin and Brou spoke about the history of SACCA, which Martin is the president of, why it was created and what its mission is. They spoke about upcoming events presented by SACCA and those who will be honored.

The ladies also spoke about the Miss Jackson Juneteenth Coalition, which Day is the chairperson of, about the first pageant and the current Miss Jackson Juneteenth M'Kenzie Lumas-Harmon who competed in the National Juneteenth Scholarship Pageant in Tulsa, Oklahoma, last year.

An informational meeting about the 2022 Miss Jackson Scholarship Pageant will be held Sunday, February 27 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday, March 6, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Lincoln Elementary, located at 532 Whitehall St, Jackson, Tenn. This is open to high school young women age 15 to 18, across West Tennessee.

In this episode of "Hub City Now with Tyrone Tony Reed Jr.", the host interviews Emmy award-winning TV news journalist Shayla Michelle Reaves, nearly a week before her Sept. 30 book signing in Jackson, Tennessee.

Reaves spoke about her new book “Echo in the Distance” and the journey she took from enjoying creative writing as a child to winning a writing competition as a freshman in college to publishing her first book.

Sixty years ago, Martin Luther King Jr. gave his iconic "I Have A Dream" speech Wednesday, Aug. 28, 1963, on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C.

Forty years later, Northwestern University freshman Shayla Michelle Reaves, entered the Written Expression Competition, which was held in honor of Dr. King. Shayla the competition with “Do You Hear the Echo in the Distance,” first performing the piece during the university’s Martin Luther King Jr. program before an audience which included keynote speaker Dr. Cornel West. Dr. West was so impressed that he asked Shayla if he could use the line “People are people, not color-coated crimes” in his future speeches.

Twenty years later, Emmy-award-winning TV news journalist Shayla Michelle Reaves turned that piece, which wouldn’t remain silent, into a children’s book named “Echo in the Distance”, written by Shayla Michelle Reaves and illustrated by Kprecia Ambers.

“Echo in the Distance” written by Shayla Michelle and illustrated by Kprecia Ambers, is a moving tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream shared from the Lincoln Memorial on August 28, 1963.

Millions watched as the civil rights leader delivered his hope for the future, his dream for what America could be.

Decades later, the iconic “I Have A Dream” speech has continued to transcend time.

“Echo in the Distance” reflects on the speech, the history that followed and serves as a reminder that each individual can play a role in realizing the dream first shared in 1963.

In the words of author Shayla Michelle, “It’s not too late. Dreams can come true. It starts with you.”

Hub City Now: Interview with Mary Ross

In this episode of "Hub City Now with Tyrone Tony Reed Jr.", the host interviews Mary Ross, Director of Sales, Catering and Marketing at Doubletree by Hilton Jackson.

Ross, who is a Sterling Award winner and was recently recognized as the "Most Influential Woman" by City of Jackson Mayor Scott Conger, shared with listeners how she came to become part of the Cooper Hotels team and how that changed the trajectory of her career.

She also spoke about the recent announcement by DoubleTree by Hilton Jackson of a commitment of 100 volunteer hours to be spent among the West Tennessee Veterans Coalition, RIFA Jackson and Boys & Girls Club of Jackson. While the hotel already supports many local non-profits, this renewed commitment ensures an even stronger effort will be made by the DoubleTree by Hilton Jackson team.

The 100 volunteer hours are in celebration of the hotel’s parent company, Cooper Hotels of Memphis, committing to 100 years of future Hilton brand affiliation among its 16 hotels and its $100 million planned Hilton investment in hotel upgrades.
