In this episode of "Hub City Now with Tyrone Tony Reed Jr.", thhe host interviews James and Kelly Christoferson, program director and program coordinator of Team Read (formerly Arise2Read Jackson).
The Christofersons and I talked about the nonprofit’s organization’s name to Team Read from Arise2Read , which was developed at Bellevue Baptist Church, in Memphis, Tenn. in 2012, how it operates and its goals.
According to its website TeamRead.org, "Team Read pairs second and third grade students (and fourth grade where available) who are reading at least one year below grade level proficiency with trained teen reading coaches for one-on-one tutoring support. Our dual-impact model helps young students to become confident readers equipped for academic success, and teens to develop work and life skills that support their transition to college and future employment.”
Team Read accomplishes this by training volunteers to tutor children one hour a week in a simple sight word program called Team Read. They also Good News Clubs at each school and partner with a church in the community to assist them to meet the needs of neighborhood families."
Team Read works with several Jackson-Madison County elementary schools.
Team Read believes all kids deserve to be great readers and teens should have access to a meaningful, paid first job. We work to close education opportunity gaps through a unique cross-age, one-on-one tutoring program after school and during the summer.
