West Tennessee Legal Services is excited to announce award winning attorney and civil rights investigator Jim Emison will be the keynote speaker for the 2021 annual Law Day celebration May 3.
Emison is an award winning lawyer from Alamo, Tennessee, who has been investigating the civil rights cold case murder of NAACP member Elbert Williams in Brownsville, Tennessee. He has obtained an official State of Tennessee historical marker honoring Elbert Williams and was instrumental in bringing about the memorial service on the 75th anniversary of Elbert Williams’s death. A team of experts assembled by Emison is working to locate Elbert Williams’s unmarked grave, and he hopes to persuade the United States Department of Justice to reopen its investigation into Elbert Williams’s death.
This year’s Law Day theme is “Advancing the Rule of Law, Now.” The theme was decided by the American Bar Association to remind everyone that we the people share the responsibility to promote the rule of law, defend liberty, and pursue justice.
“Jim’s activism to preserve the memory of Elbert Williams and to seek justice for him now fits perfectly with this year’s theme,” said Andy Cole, Pro Bono Coordinator at WTLS.
Law Day is held every year to celebrate the role of law in our society and to cultivate a deeper understanding of the legal profession. This year’s celebration will take place virtually via Zoom and will be held on May 3 from 1-2:30. The event is open to everyone, not just legal professionals.
