The City of Jackson announced Tuesday that they are in the next phase of the new garbage contract, according to a news release from the City of Jackson Mayor’s Office.  The City of Jackson initiated the bid and received requests for proposals in December 2020.  The review committee was formed and evaluated the proposals. The highest scoring proposal was from Waste Management, Inc.  Some key items in the new solid waste contract include:

  • $12.8 million dollar savings for City of Jackson over the 5 year term of the contract
  • Bulky waste will be picked up by the City of Jackson as opposed to the hybrid model from the previous contract.
  • Rolling carts will be provided for citizens to place their garbage in at each residential unit.
  • Carts must be placed in front of house. Pickup from the carport, back door, front of residence, garage will only be available for residents who apply and qualify for disabled service status as determined by the city.
  • Twice a week curbside collection will continue on the same days of the week as before.
  • Recycling bins at Westwood, South Jackson Lowes and North Park will remain in operation.

“From the beginning, everyone’s goal was to make the contract and the responsibilities more clear, so that accountability can be easier,” said Mayor Scott Conger. “Over the next few months we will be communicating with residents about changes in the new contract and what it means for them.” Conger continued.

“These savings allow us to continue discussions on furthering our long term recycling goals. I know many residents would like to have a more convenient recycling option and be able to recycle more materials. Our administration wants that too, but we have to be able to do it in a way that is transparent and efficient.”

The next step is presentation at the Agenda Review meeting on April 1, 2021 and City Council meeting on April 6, 2021 for discussion.

The current solid waste contract expires July 31, 2021.
