The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for portions of East Arkansas, North Mississippi, Southeast Missouri, and West Tennessee. The first warning is in effect from 10 a.m. Tuesday morning until 8 p.m. Tuesday evening. A second warning will be in effect from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Affected Areas:
- East Arkansas: Crittenden (including West Memphis), Cross (including Wynne), Lee (including Marianna), Phillips (including Helena-West Helena), St. Francis (including Forrest City)
- North Mississippi: DeSoto (including Southaven), Marshall (including Holly Springs), Benton (including Ashland), Tippah (including Ripley), Alcorn (including Corinth), Tishomingo (including Iuka), Tunica (including Tunica)
- Southeast Missouri: Pemiscot (including Caruthersville), Dunklin (including Kennett)
- West Tennessee: Shelby (including Memphis), Fayette (including Somerville), Tipton (including Covington), Lauderdale (including Ripley), Haywood (including Brownsville), Crockett (including Alamo), Dyer (including Dyersburg), Gibson (including Humboldt), Madison (including Jackson), Hardeman (including Bolivar), McNairy (including Selmer), Chester (including Henderson)
What to Expect:
- Today: Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 112 degrees are expected.
- Wednesday: Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 111 degrees are expected.
Impacts: Extreme heat and high humidity significantly increase the likelihood of heat-related illnesses.
Precautionary/Preparedness Actions:
- Drink plenty of fluids.
- Stay in an air-conditioned room.
- Avoid direct sunlight.
- Check up on relatives and neighbors.
Residents in the affected areas are advised to take these warnings seriously and follow the recommended precautions to stay safe during this period of extreme heat.
