A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for much of the area today due to freezing rain creating a light glaze of ice on roads and walkways, according to the National Weather Service in Memphis.
Dense and/or freezing fog this afternoon/evening may also reduce visibilities and further contribute to slick roads and hazardous travel conditions. More bitter cold on the way this weekend.
Today, Thursday, January:
- Freezing rain will start up around 8AM, continuing through the afternoon hours (finishing by 7PM)
- A light glaze of ice will further worsen travel conditions, especially for areas with snow and ice still on the roads
- Dense fog is possible starting around 3PM, reducing visibilities to 1/4 mile or less through the overnight hours
- Temperatures near freezing may cause this fog to freeze on contact, adding to the light glaze of ice from the freezing rain
- Road conditions will already be slick and dangerous. Reduced visibilities in dense fog will only make conditions worse
Friday, January 19 – Sunday, January 21:
- Temperatures will plummet below freezing again overnight tonight into tomorrow
- This will re-freeze any slush/rain on the roads from Thursday, creating dangerous black ice
- More bitter cold and single digit to sub-zero wind chills
- Saturday and Sunday mornings look the coldest with wind chills between 0°F and -10°F
