A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued and is valid from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, January 18, 2024, according to the National Weather Service in Memphis. Slippery sidewalks, roads and bridges are possible Thursday. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.

Another Arctic airmass will encompass the Mid-South Friday, January 18, 2024, dropping temperatures this weekend. Subzero wind chill values are expected Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Thursday January 18th:

  • A low-pressure system will bring freezing rain to the Mid-South, resulting in ice accumulations less than a tenth of an inch.
  • Freezing rain will transition to mostly rain in the afternoon as temperatures rise above freezing.
  • A light glaze of ice will further worsen travel conditions, especially for areas where snow and ice currently exist.

Friday, January 19 – Sunday, January 21:

  • Temperatures will rapidly decrease behind an Arctic front Friday.
  • This will result in re-freezing of slush/rain on roadways from Thursday, creating dangerous black ice.
  • Bitter cold conditions and subzero wind chills will persist through Sunday.
  • Saturday and Sunday mornings will be the coldest as wind chills fall between 0°F and -10°F.

Precautionary/preparedness actions:

Slow down and use caution while traveling. Prepare for possible power outages.
