NWS: Ice Storm Warning for Many West Tennessee Counties, Winter Weather Advisory for Others

The National Weather Service in Memphis has issued an Ice Storm Warning for several West Tennessee counties, which will go into effect at 6 p.m. Monday, January 30, 2023 and last through 12 p.m. Wednesday, February 1, 2023.

ICE STORM WARNING:

Those counties included in the warning are: Weakley, Henry, Dyer, Gibson, Carroll, Benton, Lauderdale, Tipton, Haywood, Crockett, Madison, Chester, Henderson, Decatur, Shelby, Fayette, and Hardeman.

* What…significant icing expected. Ice accumulations of a quarter to one half an inch.

* Where…portions of East Arkansas, North Mississippi and West

Tennessee.

* Impacts…power outages and tree damage are likely due to the ice. Travel could be nearly impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.

* Additional details: partial ice melting may occur Tuesday afternoon before freezing rain returns Tuesday evening.

Precautionary/preparedness actions: Travel is strongly discouraged. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. Prepare for possible power outages.

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY:

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 12 a.m. Tuesday to 12 p.m. Wednesday for Hardin and McNairy counties:

Here’s what to expect:

* What…freezing rain expected. Total ice accumulations of around two tenths of an inch.

* Impacts…difficult travel conditions are possible. The  hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.

* Additional details… partial to complete ice melting is  expected Tuesday afternoon before additional freezing arrives Tuesday night.

Precautionary/preparedness actions… slow down and use caution while traveling. Prepare for possible power outages.

Here is a model depiction, courtesy of the US National Weather Service in Memphis, of how the radar **may** look over the next 48 hours. We are expecting two rounds of mostly freezing rain. The first round will be overnight tonight into early Tuesday. Then, a brief break in the precipitation will occur Tuesday morning, before the second round moves in Tuesday afternoon and then persists into the overnight hours.
This is going to result in significant impacts across the Mid-South, including power outages, travel difficulties and tree damage. Now is the time to prepare.
