NWS: Tornado Watch in Effect until 8 P.M. Wednesday for the Mid-South

The National Weather Service in Memphis has issued a Tornado Watch for the Mid-South until 8 p.m. Wednesday.

This watch includes portions of East Arkansas, Northeast Louisiana, most of Mississippi and all of West Tennessee.

The National Weather Service in Memphis issued a High Wind Warning earlier Wednesday, which is in effect from now until 7 p.m. Central Wednesday for the Mid-South, ahead of the sever weather that is expected in the area Wednesday afternoon.

NWS said south winds of 25 to 30 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are expected in portions of North Mississippi, West Tennessee, East Arkansas and Southeast Missouri. The following West Tennessee counties are included in this warning: Benton, Carroll, Chester, Decatur, Dyer, Fayette, Gibson, Hardeman, Hardin, Haywood, Henderson, Henry, Lake, Lauderdale, Madison, McNairy, Obion, Shelby , Tipton and Weakley.

Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines, NWS said and power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

NWS said people should avoid being outside in forested areas and around trees and branches. If possible, remain in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm, and avoid windows. Use caution if you must drive.
