Madison Academic Magnet High School Student Selected for $180,000 Navy Scholarship

Jackson-native Serenity Williams, a senior at Madison Academic Magnet High School, has been awarded the Navy’s prestigious, $180,000 Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Scholarship, which will pay her four-year expenses to attend Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, according to a news release from the U.S. Navy.

Williams was selected for the scholarship from among thousands of applicants nation-wide and was chosen because of her exceptional academic and leadership record. She will formally receive the scholarship during a ceremony at her school Thursday, April 8.

Academically, Serenity has a 3.6 GPA in honors advanced placement courses. She also is captain of her school’s cross country, track, and powder-puff football teams, and plays varsity basketball. She is Teen President for Jack and Jill of America (Jackson), a graduate of the Jackson Chamber of Commerce Leadership University, a Symphony Ambassador, and a certified youth soccer referee. In addition, Serenity is a Miss Top Teen of America, a U.S. Naval Academy Summer STEM Seminar selectee, a Union University Creative Writing Conference finalist, a Debutante Cotillion selectee, and a Beautillion Belle.

Serenity’s mother, Sheree Williams, is a Commander in the Navy.

Commander DJ Jackson, Deputy Director, Outreach and Diversity, Navy Recruiting Command, will present Serenity with her scholarship Thursday, April 8, at  her high school. Joining him will be Commander Sheree Williams, and Jackson Mayor Scott Conger.
