The Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department wants citizens to be aware of a phone scam.
The health department received several complaints today (Thursday, March 4) from out-of-state residents claiming they received phone calls from our office requesting personal information. The calls came from the health department phone number, but not health department staff.
The health department immediately filed a report with the Jackson Police Department.
Health department staff never ask for social security numbers, insurance card information, Medicare or Medicaid numbers, or financial information. Contact tracers handling COVID-19 response will ask for a person’s date of birth to verify their identity.
If you received a call from the health department’s 731-423-3020 phone number and gave your personal information, please file a report with your local police department. Investigators encourage citizens who gave their information to run a credit check within the first 48 hours to see if someone opened a new line of credit in their name.
