The National Weather Service in Memphis has issued a Winter Storm Watch which will go into effect at 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14 through 12 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16. for the Mid-South.
In West Tennessee, the affected counties will include Benton, Carroll, Chester, Crockett, Decatur, Dyer, Fayette, Gibson, Hardeman, Hardin, Haywood, Henderson, Henry, Lake, Lauderdale, Madison, McNairy, Obion, Shelby, Tipton and Weakley.
NWS said a major winter storm is expected to impact the Mid-South Sunday evening through Monday evening and that a potent upper level trough will move into the Mid-South.
With cold temperatures already in place, winter precipitation is expected to fall across the Mid-South.
NWS said heavy mixed precipitation will be possible. Significant accumulations may occur across the Mid-South.
At this time, snow is expected to occur across northeast Arkansas, the Missouri bootheel, and northwest Tennessee. Further south, through the Memphis metro area into the Jackson, Tennessee area, precipitation may start out as sleet then change to all snow.
Across northeast Mississippi into areas of West Tennessee near Savannah and Selmer, a mixture of freezing rain and sleet may occur.
NWS said travel could be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute. The cold wind chills as low as 5 degrees below zero could result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken. Power outages may occur in areas that receive freezing rain.
