The U.S. neared 210,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases Wednesday afternoon and remains the country with the most confirmed cases than any other country in the world, according to data from the Center of System Science and Engineering from John Hopkins University.
The U.S. surpassed China and Italy for the highest number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the world six days ago, when 100,717 cases were confirmed. But, in less than a week, the total has more than doubled, with a total of 209, 071 confirmed COVID-19 cases. That was an increase of 108,354 cases in six days.
President Donald Trump and health officials have warned that a COVID-19 surge of new patients will occur in the coming weeks and that the nation is looking at 100,000-plus deaths by the time the pandemic ends.
Italy, which has 110,574 cases, still has the most deaths reported in the world with 13,155. Spain, which has 102,179 cases, has the second-highest deaths reported with 9,131. China, where the COVID-19 outbreak was first reported and has 82,361 cases, has reported 3,316 deaths, while the U.S. has reported 1,139 deaths.
Italy has reported that 16,847 people have recovered; China reported 76,405 recoveries; Spain has reported 22,647 and the U.S. is reporting 8,474 recoveries.
